Although recently Asia steel scrap trends to depreciate, especially Japan steel scrap keep declining from USD370.00/MT (Top in Feb) to current USD270-280.00/Mt, the shortage of Asia steel scrap will sustain for a long term comparing demand with supply. As Asian countries like China, India, vietnam, Korea all focus on development of steel industry, the demand for steel scrap enhance accordingly. It is reported that Taiwan needs steel scrap 5-6 million Tons per year, and 50% depend on import, last year 2.85 million tons imported were mostly from Japan, Russia, Philippines and America. The statistics shows china built blast furnace 81 sets in 2003 and 57 sets in 2004, converter and electric arc furnace 59 sets in 2003 and 30 sets in 2004. Once put into service fully, the hunger for steel scraps is undoubted. The situation also aggravated by other Asian countries. Vietnam government's economic programs also emphasize on developing steel industry. The yielding capacity in 2010 is forecasted to be 8 million tons, major in electric arc furnace smelting. Furthermore, India also achieved brilliantly on its development of steel industry. All evidences above indicate that shortage of steel scraps is inevitable, a fight for resource purchased will be more severer worldwide.
